2013-08525 Improving 9-1-1 Reliability; Reliability and Continuity of Communications Networks, Including Broadband Technologies Proposed Rule The Federal Communications Commission proposes a range of approaches to ensure that providers of 9-1-1 communications services implement best practices and other sound engineering principles to improve the reliability and resiliency of the Nation's 9-1-1 networks. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking also proposes amendments to the Commission's current rules to clarify and add specificity to service providers' obligations to notify 9-1-1 call centers of communications outages. This action follows an inquiry by the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau into widespread 9-1-1 service outages during the "derecho" windstorm that affected large portions of the United States in June 2012, revealing significant vulnerabilities in current 9-1-1 network configuration and service provider maintenance practices. The Commission requests comment on these proposals to improve the reliability and resiliency of 9-1-1 networks and ensure that 9-1-1 call centers receive timely and actionable notification of service outages. 2013-04-12 2013 4 https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2013/04/12/2013-08525/improving-9-1-1-reliability-reliability-and-continuity-of-communications-networks-including https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2013-04-12/pdf/2013-08525.pdf Federal Communications Commission 161 The Federal Communications Commission proposes a range of approaches to ensure that providers of 9-1-1 communications services implement best practices and other sound engineering principles to improve the reliability and resiliency of the Nation's...
