Van Buren, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, Acquisition and Management. U.S. AUTO INDUSTRY STABILIZATION Committee on Financial Services: Held a hearing entitled ``Stabilizing the Financial Condition of the American Automobile Industry.'' Testimony was heard from Senators Levin and Voinovich; Representatives Levin, Upton, Hoekstra, Miller of Michigan, and Kilpatrick, the following CEOs of the automobile industry: G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., Chairman, GM; Robert Nardelli, Chrysler; and Alan Mulally, President, FMC; Ron Gettelfinger, President, United Auto Workers; and public witnesses. OVERSIGHT--FINANCIAL RESCUE PLANS Committee on Financial Services: On November 18, the Committee held a hearing entitled ``Oversight of Implementation of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 and of Government Lending and Insurance Facilities: Impact on Economy and Credit Availability.'' Testimony was heard from Henry M. Paulson, Jr., Secretary of the Treasury; Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman, Board of Governors, Federal Reserve System; Sheila C. Bair, Chairman, FDIC; and public witnesses. U.N. MANDATE FOR IRAQ Committee on Foreign Affairs: Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight held a hearing on Renewing the United Nations Mandate for Iraq: Plans and Prospects. Testimony was heard from public witnesses. IMPLEMENTING NEW G.I. BILL REQUIREMENTS Committee on Veterans' Affairs: On November 18, the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity held a hearing on VA's Short- and Long-Term Strategies for Implementing New G.I. Bill Requirements. Testimony was heard from Keith Wilson, Director, Office of Education Service, Veterans Benefits Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs. Joint Meetings TURKMENISTAN Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe: Commission concluded a hearing to examine Turkmenistan, focusing on prospects for change and a new legislative framework that will result in real reform for upcoming parliamentary election, after receiving testimony from George Krol, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State; Eric McGlinchey, George Mason University Department of Public and International Affairs, and Anthony Bowyer, Caucasus and Central Asia International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), both of Washington, D.C.; and Cathy Fitzpatrick, Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, New York, New York.
