The relief would have allowed plans that were reeling from the extreme stock market losses to possibly avoid paying onerous excise taxes to the IRS, and make mandatory additional contributions to the plan on top of their collectively bargained agreement. If our employers are hit with these unexpected additional fees, it could bankrupt some companies, thus eliminating IBEW jobs. The short-term relief that the House rejected costs the federal government nothing and does not create additional liability for the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC).
