KFB is seeking clarity on what plans the USFWS have regarding the Lesser Prairie Chicken and how ranching in the shortgrass prairie ecosystem of western Kansas might be impacted. KFB is closely following how USDA APHIS and other agencies are monitoring and protecting the Kansas swine heard from African Swine Fever (ASF). Feral hog populations are increasing in Kansas and exploding in adjacent states of Oklahoma and Missouri. The fire at livestock processing facility in Holcomb, Kansas altered where cattle producers ship their cattle. We have followed USDA Packers and Stockyard Division's reports on livestock marketing due to the fire. COVID has created wild swings in the protein markets. Cattle producers are concerned about market movements between box beef prices and live/fat cattle prices. Multiple bills have been introduced in congress that impact small and medium slaughter plants and meat packers. Additional bills limiting the ways and opportunities producers market livestock have also been introduced. Congress passed a number of bills that will impact farmers and ranchers through USDA and SBA programs, including the Paycheck Protection Program Loan.
